HMAS DIAMANTINA
Australia's Last River Class Frigate, 1945 - 1980
by Peter Nunan
Published by Slouch Hat Publications, McCrae, Victoria, 2005
ISBN:0957975279
Diamantina is Australia’s largest World War II survivor and the last of over
200 River class and variant frigates the Allies built during that conflict.
Built in Queensland, HMAS Diamantina went to war at Bougainville in 1945, and
was later to become the venue for the Japanese surrenders at Nauru and Ocean
Island. In two commissions between 1945 and 1980, Diamantina gave outstanding
service to the nation - in war, in making the peace, during the Cold War, and
in oceanographic research; in conjunction with bodies like CSIRO. She carried
out oceanographic research in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and also trained
thousands of Navy recruits. Decommissioned in 1980, HMAS Diamantina is now a
major attraction at Queensland’s Maritime Museum located on the Brisbane River.

STEINAECKER’S HORSEMEN:
South Africa 1899-1903
Author - Bill Woolmore, author of THE BUSHVELDT CARBINEERS
ISBN:0958478244
STEINAECKER’S HORSEMEN is a new book relating the exploits of an irregular unit
fighting on the British side during the Anglo – Boer War of 1899-1902. The book
is written by Bill Woolmore, author of the very successful ‘Bushveldt
Carbineers and the Pietersburg Light Horse’. Sometimes they roamed with a
hundred or more men but more often they were in small groups of up to 4 men and
held lonely picquet posts on the Lebombo range from which they patrolled the
border with Portuguese East Africa. The maverick commander of this unit,
Francis Christiaan Ludwig von Steinaecker, was a flamboyant and eccentric
character; a former Prussian officer who rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel
and was awarded the DSO for his service. He failed to adjust to civilian
life after the war and committed suicide in 1917. Book number:
